The present invention relates to the manufacture of optical waveguides. One type of optical waveguide is a planar optical waveguide, such as an optical fiber, which is defined in U.S. Pat. No. 4,807,123, entitled "Glass Filled Waveguide," issued to Barnaby et al., on Feb. 28, 1989, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. Another type of optical waveguide is a curved optical fiber, such as a single-mode optical fiber, which may be fabricated by either of two general methods. One method involves drawing a preform that is to be blown or stretched into a fiber. However, it is possible to draw the preform into a fiber by a well-known process such as flame hydrolysis. Yet another type of optical waveguide is a curved or planar optical fiber ribbon, such as a dual-mode optical fiber ribbon, which may be fabricated by either of two general methods. One method involves drawing a preform that is to be cut into individual fibers. However, it is possible to draw the preform into a ribbon by a well-known process such as flame hydrolysis. The other method involves winding a drawing preform around a mandrel to form a multiple-core optical fiber. However, it is possible to wind the preform around a mandrel by a well-known process such as flame hydrolysis. In both the curved fiber and the curved ribbon, a well-known draw process, known as "strand spinning," is generally used to draw or stretch the preform.
